STEM Content Knowledge
Content knowledge refers to concepts, theories and principles that are taught for students to expand their knowledge in a certain content area. Content knowledge also helps us learn new information and how they interpret new information. Once a topic is taught and understood, we are able to apply the content knowledge to solve real world problems.
STEM is an approach to learning that incorporates our content knowledge from different disciplines to help students solve real world problems. The combination of science, technology, engineering and mathematics work together to help students identify a problem and than solve the problem.
The MSDE STEM standards of practice is the foundation for STEM education. There are many standards, but the most important ones are inquiry, logical reasoning and collaboration. In order a lesson to be a true STEM lesson it has to start off with a question, this question leads to more questions and research to help solve a problem. Once the research is complete, habng stuents ask themselves “does that make sense” and “can support our solution?” Then the final step is working collaboratively to see the solution to the end and test out their ideas. The MSDE STEM standards of practice are the foundation in the STEM process.
21st Century Skills I believe are one of the most important parts of STEM. Many students today are able to use technology and can use the STEM disciples to solve problems, the issue our students face is not being able to collaborate, communicate with others, critical thinking, being flexible and how to correctly socialize with another. These 21st century skills are issues adults face everyday, by having our students start now with STEM they will be more successful than we could ever be.
STEM engineering design process is a huge part of content knowledge because it is the process students solve a problem. The engineering and design process help students go through phases in order to solve a problem and test their solution. Each phase has a specific goal in order for student to be able to solve the problem at the end.
When I think of STEM content knowledge, I think of this infographic. STEM education is not one way like any other content, it is the incorporation of all the content areas, practices, skills and processes to solve a real world problems.

White Nose Syndrome
In our Teaching and Learning Biology course I had to work in a group to write a grant proposal project to protect Little Brown Bats from White Nose Syndrome (WNS). WNS is a fungus, with no cure, that causes bats to become overactive during hibernation. This causes many issues for bats and it a very deadly disease. In our grant proposal, we proposed that we design a facility to help scientist test their WNS cures in a controlled and safe environment for bats.

Unique Animal Adaptations Project
In our Teaching and Learning Biology course I had to work in a group to develop a prototype of a product or system that is based on a particular adaptation of one or more species of organism or characteristics of a biological population, community, or ecosystem. Our group designed a pen that was able to identify different allergens in food to reduce the number of allergic reactions. The animal adaptation came from the butterflies chemoreceptors. The butterflies chemoreceptors react to the presence of chemicals on the leaves. If the cells react to the chemicals on the leaf and sense a toxin, the butterfly knows not to lay its eggs there. We used this idea to help us design a pen in order to warn children and adults of an allergen in their food that could identity if the food was safe to eat or not.
